On 31 August 1779, Laurent-Joseph Murith, canon of theGreat St Bernard Hospice and a botanist, reached the summit of Mont Vélan (3,734 m), on the border between the Aosta Valley and Valais, together with the hunters Moret and Genoud. This was the first documented ascent of the mountain.
